Although RIT started strong with a rush into the Union zone, Union picked up a rebound of the shot and sped back into the RIT zone and fired a shot in the net off the pad of goalie Elaine Vonderembse.
Despite the early setback, RIT managed to control the play for most of the period, outshooting Union 11-6.
As quickly as Union struck in the first period, RIT struck :17 into the second period with Erin Topley sliding one behind Union goalie Dana Smullyan just 0:17 into the second period.
After a full period of even play, the officials missed a blatant call at the RIT blue line, and Kate Gustafson broke in and slid the puck into the corner of the net with 0:41 remaining on the clock to give Union a 2-1 lead. RIT quickly brought play back into the Union zone, forcing Smullyan to cover the puck with 0:25 left in the period. RIT won the next faceoff, and Alysia Park found Kasie Strong in front of the net to jam home the puck and tie the game at 2.
In the third period, with Elizabeth Flanagan sent off for hooking, RIT finally put together a decent power play and scored a goal. RIT captain Jen Gorczinsky fired a puck that deflected off the leg of Jennie Nicholas and found the twine.
Despite a rush late in the period, RIT goalie Elaine Vonderembse made the save of the game, sliding across her goal crease and stopping a Union shot with the heel of her skate.
Alysia Park closed out the scoring in the game with an empty net goal with 0:16 left in the game. The goal, her 27th of the season, set an RIT Women's hockey record for scoring in a single season.
Great job ladies!
Interesting things from the night:
-"You Suck!" for introductions. It would take on a whole new meaning for the womens teams. ""You suck! (We hope!)" was recommended to me by my friend Nate.
-After I yelled for a glove pass (which one of the officials then correctly called), I was asked by a couple of people around me if I wanted to become a ref or something. I told them "I can think of more fun ways to go blind than to become a ref!" Took them a couple of seconds to realize what I meant.
-After the huge save in the third by the RIT goalie, we noticed that the Union players started to celebrate just a wee bit early. "Premature Celebration", we noted. "Yeah, some guys know all about things going off prematurely."
